4th gen ipod touch won't sync with latest itunes version

I recently updated to the latest version of itunes and now when I connect my 4th gen ipod touch with my usb cable, the computer sounds, indicating it recognizes the ipod, but the itunes screen doesn't show an icon for the ipod, and it won't sync.
